Portfolio: Interstate 405 Corridor
The Washington State Department of Transportation plans to invest enormous amounts of capital over the next several decades improving the 40-mile I-405 freeway corridor through some of Western Washington’s most vibrant and sensitive urban fabric. A comprehensive Context-Sensitive Solutions guideline document was created to guide future planners and designers on the look and feel decided upon by committees from the involved communities. The proposals ranged in variety from bridge, column and barrier design, to fences, lights, artwork and plant selection. The design team worked closely with DOT staff, technical consultants, elected officials and concerned citizens. The designs prescribed in the guidelines ensure that future corridor projects will enhance the community by respecting the natural, cultural and historic values of Western Washington’s Puget Sound region.
