Portfolio: Sterling Grove Historic District
During the Environmental Impact Statement phase, it was determined that the new Interstate 49 Connector through Lafayette would adversely affect the Sterling Grove Historic District- in particular the St. Genevieve Church and School sites. A study was conducted of how to mitigate the access, circulation and aesthetics of the site, without negatively affecting the operations of the church and school. Proposals were made to improve the driveways, parking and drop-off areas as well as the open spaces and play areas for the school children. Recommendations to screen the roadway ramps and structures and integrate them into the district were also developed. As a result, the spatial relationship between the school and the church was improved as well as the vehicular and pedestrian connections to the surrounding neighborhood.
